Get down at the Yabun Festival

22 Jan

With the promise of a long weekend of beers, beaches and BBQs; Australia Day is certainly a highlight to the Australian New Year. It is important to remember though that for some, the date marks Indigenous struggle in light of British colonisation, referred to as the Aboriginal Day of Mourning or as Invasion Day. However, events such as the annual Yabun Festival invites all Australians to come together to enjoy and discover Australia Day in a whole new light.

Yabun Festival 2013 is an annual Australia Day event that celebrates the success of Indigenous culture, music and art. The Festival, which will be held at Victoria Park (at Broadway), is renowned for its exceptional musical line up, as well as the numerous stalls and interactive workshops for both kids and adults alike. Some exciting highlights to this year’s musical line-up include Archie Roach, Warren H Williams, Pitjantjatjara Man, Frank Yamma, as well as Mop and The Drop Outs.

It is a big year for the Festival, with 2013 marking the 10th anniversary of major supporter Koori Radio’s ‘Young, Black and Deadly’ project, which encourages Aboriginal youth to excel in performing arts. Also, this year marks the 20th Anniversary of Gadigal Information Service and the 75th Anniversary of the National Aborigines Progressive Association, both integral within our vibrant Indigenous culture.

However, the best way to describe the Festival comes from the Indigenous title itself. Meaning ‘music with a beat’, Yabun’s lively atmosphere offers an exhilarating Australia Day experience. We thoroughly recommend getting yourself down to Victoria Park on the 26th for what is sure to be a brilliant day!

Artisan fun at Carriage Works

2 Sep

At South of the Border we love the best of local. The Everleigh Market at Carriage Works is certainly that. As long time pilgrims to the weekly farmer’s market on a Saturday, today was the first chance for Nathan and Baptiste to check out the flipside of local. A collection of artisans from across Sydney, including the inner city. We just love the cool crafts that represent the manifestations of each artist’s perspective on the world. The creative, cool and colourful all at once. Definitely a great way to spend a few hours and a few dollars on a Spring Sunday!

How to kill time at Chennai International

20 Jul

How often do we find ourselves with bordom time these days? Laptops, smart phones, ipads and a myriad of other techno gadgets fill any time void with some sort of stimulation. However, travelling in India is sometimes like journeying through a blackhole, where time stands still and white noise engulfs everything.

Co-founder Nathan came across one such moment while transiting in Chennai (Madras), attempting a rather ambitious journey involving four different vehicles and two states. Midway through the journey he and Laura found themselves with time to kill in Chennai International Airport (aka MAA for the aviation geeks out there). Being in MAA is like stepping back into the 80’s, but not in a retro cool shoulder-pad-wearing way… So what else to do than to add a little adventure to the day, embarking on a journey of culinary discovery!

Welcome to Laura and Nathan’s MAA Food Safari!

Maggi magic in Madras

Well well well, if it isn’t my childhood standing right in front of me in all its MSG/food colouring/prawn flavoured noodle glory. By far the most popular way to kill time in MAA, a bowl of Maggi Masala!

Samosa in Chennai airport

No Indian food safari with any credibility wouldn’t stop off at a samosa shack. Despite being officially ‘closed’ for no apparent reason, the friendly shop attendent nabbed us the last remaining parcel of oily veg goodness! Pheew.

Samosa saviour

With the help of an improvised table and eating devise, we found saviour with the samosa. Killing at least 5 minutes. We’re on a roll!

Krishna Sweets chennai

Hmm… what’s over here. Krishna sweets, could have sworn I saw guys in the burbs cooking up handmade chips in massive bowls of deep frying oil… The health food journey continues

Hand made chips at Krishna Sweets Chennai

Ah ha! As suspected… maximum awesomeness snacks! Perhaps will have to do a few laps of the runway later to burn it off though 😦

French chocolates in India?

To cap off an already remarkable journey through the culinary delights of Chennai International, we stumbled (literally) apon a french chocolatier. Is it possible? An Indian squirrel complete with choc chest nut says YES! Wow stomach full and not necessarily overly happy. What a way to kill a couple of hours!
